Caregiver Burnout

Whether the caregiver is you or someone you know, chances are that burnout is in the picture.

Caregivers have a lot on their plates, especially during the holiday season. Errands, shopping, travel plans, guests, and holiday gatherings with family and friends.

The Cleveland Clinic describes caregiver burnout as a state of exhaustion – often physical, emotional, and mental. It can bring a change in attitude from positive and caring to negative and unconcerned. How does a good caregiver protect him/herself?

Accept Help

No one can do it all. No one. Even Wonder Woman needed help once in a while. When someone offers to step in and help you, accept the offer! Meditate. Take a nap. Run some errands. Take yourself out to lunch. Accept the help.

Practice Self-Care

We all need a little time for ourselves. Taking a little time out of your day for yourself can allow your mind and body to relax. Walk, meditate, call a friend, or read a book. If you prefer the tech route, check out the Calm, Headspace, or Mindfulness apps to help you get started.

Join a Support Group

Many others are experiencing the same burnout. Talking with others about the struggles and responsibilities of caregiving can help you avoid feeling alone. Here is a list of resources to help you find the right support group.
